We are Worried Over Wave of Attacks, Killings in Plateau – NUJ

Journalists in Plateau State said they are worried over the spate of attacks, killings and destruction of properties in some communities in the state.

Rising from a congress meeting of the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Wednesday in Jos, the NUJ members expressed fears that these security challenges could lead to food insecurity.

In a 12-point communique, the members of the pen profession and watch dogs of the society called on security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure that farmers are protected on their farms as the farming season sets in.

Disturbed by plight of displaced persons in the wake of recent attacks in Bokkos and Bassa LGA, the Council called the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to coordinate in providing reliefs to the displaced persons.

They also supported the call on the youths to defend their communities within the ambit of the law.

The NUJ members commended the Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA), for the ongoing clearing of drainages to avert flooding as the raining season sets in and called on the agency to ensure the  immediate evacuation of debris across the city Centre.

It also decried the perennial water scarcity in both rural and urban communities in the state, the council appealed to the state government to prioritise the provision of access to potable water to communities to avert the spread of communicable diseases.

On the recent fire incident at the Terminus Market, the Congress sympathised with the traders and called on the state government, groups and well-meaning individuals to support the over 500 traders whose shops and property were destroyed by the inferno.

It further called on both the State and the Federal Governments to equip the various fire service departments with functional equipment to enable them respond swiftly to incidences of fire outbreak and other emergencies in the state.

While commending the efforts of the state government in tackling the menace of child trafficking, they advised parents to desist from allowing their children to be used for such illegal and criminal venture.

They also appealed to religious and traditional rulers to join hands with authorities in the fight against the menace.

Highpoint of the meeting was the inauguration of a new chapel with a charge on them to be guided by the journalistic ethics in their professional conduct.
