PLASU Visits IHVN, Seeks Partnership on Research, Other Areas

As part of the proactive steps being taken by the management of Plateau State University, (PLASU), Bokkos towards enhancing the University’s research capacity and providing valuable opportunities for its faculty and students in the field of human virology, as well as strengthening ties with a prominent national health institution, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University recently led a delegation on a visit to the headquarters of the Institute of Human Virology, (IHVN) in Abuja.
During the visit, Acting Vice Chancellor of PLASU, Prof. Shedrack Best disclosed that the visit was aimed at forging a strong partnership between the two institutions.
He also informed his host that PLASU has established the Faculty of Health Sciences with programs in Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science and Public Health Sciences adding that the recent approval for the commencement of the Medical Sciences program with student admissions slated for the forthcoming academic session in October-November 2025.
The Acting Vice Chancellor specifically requested opportunities for PLASU faculty members to collaborate with IHVN on research initiatives and for students to gain valuable practical experience through attachments and training within the institute.
He also appealed to IHVN to consider donating a laboratory to PLASU or equipping an existing one to bolster the University’s research capabilities.
Receiving the PLASU delegation, the Chief Executive of IHVN, Professor Patrick Dakum disclosed that IHVN is keen on establishing a strong relationship with PLASU.
The IHVN CEO while acknowledging the current challenges of dwindling donor funding due to international policies reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to enhancing its services.
He recalled how the initial groundwork for IHVN was laid in Plateau State, and emphasized that a synergy with PLASU would be a natural and mutually beneficial progression. Prof. Dakum pledged technical support to PLASU and expressed openness to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that could encompass various areas of collaboration including the integration of PLASU staff into the directing teams of specific IHVN programs, access to IHVN’s quality assurance protocols and laboratory equipment maintenance expertise, the potential for IHVN staff to serve as faculty support for training among other areas of partnership
