Declare Nigeria a Christian Majority Nation Under Siege, Int’l Coalition Urges U.S. Government

An international coalition against the genocide of Christians in Nigeria (ICAC-GEN) has called on the United States to formally recognize Nigeria as a “Christian nation under siege by a government of Islamic fundamentalists imposed by Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.”
In a petition addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and signed by Dr. Nwankwo T. Nwaezeigwe, PhD, President of ICAC-GEN, the group outlined its mission, aims, and objectives.
The group said its petition aims to draw attention to their earlier protest against President Biden’s administration regarding the persecution of Christians in Nigeria by Muslim leaders and their jihadist affiliates.
The coalition criticized the U.S. government’s failure to officially acknowledge this situation.
ICAC-GEN, a registered nonprofit advocacy group based in the United States, stated that their protest letter, dated January 18, 2024, was a response to the U.S. government’s decision to exclude Nigeria from the global list of countries where Christians face severe persecution.
In a document titled “Non-Inclusion of Nigeria among the ‘2023 Countries of Particular Concern, Special Watch List Countries, Entities of Particular Concern,'” the group had asserted that the U.S. government’s exclusion of Nigeria from this list indicated that the Biden administration was complicit in the genocide against Nigerian Christians.
The coalition expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump for his consistent concern for the plight of persecuted Christians in Nigeria and worldwide. They stated, “President Trump has demonstrated both the moral capacity and political will to guide the United States back to its greatness as a nation that stands for God’s principles.”
They referenced his Executive Orders and aligned them with the biblical verse 2 Chronicles 7:14, which calls for humility, prayer, and seeking God’s face for healing. The coalition recalled that in 2018, President Trump directly addressed then-Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari about the persecution of Christians, stating, “We’ve had very serious problems with Christians who have been murdered in Nigeria. We’re going to be working on that problem very hard because we can’t allow that to happen.”
The group highlighted President Trump’s compassionate gesture when he hosted Joy Bishara and Lydia Pogu in the Oval Office on July 6, 2017.
Bishara and Pogu were among the fifty Christian students who escaped from Boko Haram captivity after being kidnapped along with over two hundred of their peers in Chibok, Borno State, Nigeria.
ICAC-GEN lamented that “President Trump’s visionary concern for Nigerian Christians could not be fully realized at the time due to the harmful actions of those opposing him.”
They however, expressed joy at his return to political prominence, describing it as a sign of God’s answered prayers.
The coalition also drew a parallel between the election of President Trump and the biblical story of Paul and Silas, who prayed and sang praises to God even in difficult circumstances.
They affirmed that Nigerian Christians continue to pray without ceasing in support of Trump’s victory, stating, “We prayed from the moment he announced his candidacy to reclaim his supposed stolen mandate, through all the challenges he faced, all the way to Election Day. Much like the walls of Jericho, we hope to see the barriers against Christians in Nigeria fall.”
