Executive Retreat: Repositioning Plateau for National, Global Impact

In its commitment and quest to reposition the state and its citizens for national and global impact, the administration of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang recently convened a high-level executive retreat with the theme “That Plateau May Shine.”
The 7-day gathering was also to review the State’s Development Framework (PSDF) 2023–2027 by assessing its implementation progress, achievements, challenges, and lessons learned as well as understand the philosophy and thrust of the 2025 Budget of Consolidation and Sustainability.
It was to enhance Inter-Agency Coordination and collaboration, promote Stakeholder Engagement and enhance communication strategies, crisis management, and partnership-building for inclusive development explore revenue diversification, and financial sustainability, and strengthen transparency and accountability.
The retreat was to also leverage technology for governance to achieve improved service delivery, citizen engagement, and cybersecurity compliance and create models that will make Plateau State an attractive universal economic hub and a compelling tourism destination in Africa.
At the end of the brainstorming sessions, participants resolved to govern under God as stewards and servants of all He has created under their care.
In a 5-page communique issued at the end of the retreat held at Miango Rest Home, Bassa LGA, participants resolved to undertake a mindset of re-orientation so that our good thinking will result in good governance for Plateau.
They also resolved to stay focused and be diligent in the execution of the core vision of the Time Is Now philosophy.
On their resolve to return to and imbibe the long-held values of transparency, righteousness, love, unity and integrity that had made Plateau State a leading centre of excellence, peace and prosperity, participants agreed to “transform Plateau from Poverty to prosperity leveraging untapped human and natural resources.”
They also resolved to deliberately make Plateau the ultimate tourism destination by developing a tourism masterplan.
The communique read in part: “Conscious of the urgency to make an impactful turnaround for Plateau State, participants overwhelmingly resolved to explore strategic funding options through networking with multi-lateral organizations and the diaspora.
“Pursue the deployment of technology in governance and undertake data-based decision-making for development.
“Mainstream strategic communication to pro-actively project the Plateau narrative
“Promote and strengthen transparency processes and practices of making Plateau a national model of transparency and accountability.
“Observe, promote and maintain a healthy lifestyle and mental health for optimal productivity.
“To institute a state merit award policy which will Publicly recognize and appreciate citizens of Plateau who have at various times distinguished themselves in the service of the state or nation.
“Agreed to mainstream and strengthen the standard Monitoring and Evaluation, and learning framework to track progress and assess performance in service delivery.”
In attendance at the retreat were Gov. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, his Deputy, Hon Josephine Piyo, Secretary to the Government of the State, Arc. Samuel Jatau, the Chief of Staff, Bldr. Jeremiah Satmak, the Head of Service, Stephen Gadong, State Executive Council members, some Special Advisers, Chairmen of Commissions, Permanent Secretaries, Chief Executives and Heads of Agencies, Boards and Parastatals, Development Partners, and critical non-state actors.
The event featured paper presentations by resource persons from academia and other fields of human endeavour.
It also featured experience-sharing sessions during which elder statesmen shared their experiences with the participants engaging in Focused Group and panel discussions towards providing transformational leadership with timelines that are expected to turn around the fortunes of the state for the better.
Leaders Who Understand the Times; Values Reorientation: The Key to Economic Rebirth, Infrastructural Development, Peaceful Coexistence and Good Governance; The Landscape Innovative Finance for Sustainable Development, Healthy Lifestyle Choices for Work-Life Balance for Top Executives and Required Synergy Between the Executive and Public Career Civil Servant as an Effective Means of Rebranding the Service were few among the various issues that dominated discussions at the gathering held at Miango Rest Home in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Other topics include ‘Avoiding Financial Pitfalls in Governance: Transparency and Accountability Strategies for Sustainable Governance and the Nigerian Tax Reforms and Revenue Expansion Strategy.
