MBF Opposes Establishment of Livestock Ministry

The Middle Belt Forum has opposed the establishment of a Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the Presidential Committee on Implementing Livestock Reforms.
According to a statement signed by its National President, Dr Pogu Bitrus, the Forum said it believed that the decision was not in the best interest of the nation adding that it failed to address the fundamental problems affecting Nigeria’s agriculture.
The MBF faulted the focus on livestock development while neglecting critical areas such as the production and processing of industrial crops, agricultural marketing, and trade, which are essential for driving Nigeria’s agriculture.
The Forum also expressed concerns about the composition of the Presidential Committee, suggesting that it does not reflect the ethnic diversity outlined in the nation’s Constitution stating that the committee represent the interests of a specific ethnic group.
It called on President Bola Tinubu to reverse the decision and instead focus on integrating crops, livestock, fisheries, and forestry under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
The MBF also urged the President to personally visit IDP camps in the Middle Belt states and provide comfort and support to the displaced persons who have suffered as a result of herdsmen attacks.
The Forum emphasized the need to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s agriculture and called for a solution that prioritizes the well-being of the people and the agricultural sector as a whole.
