Pay Workers Their Outstanding Salaries, NUJ tells PLSG

Members of the Plateau State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, have called on the Plateau State Government to pay its workers their outstanding salaries.

The members of the pen profession also decried the rising costs of food and commodities in the market, fuel scarcity, bad roads and urged governments at all levels to do all they can to bring succour to the common man.

Rising from its congress meeting held at the NUJ Secretariat in Jos, the Union advised that whenever salaries would not be paid when due, government should find a way of passing such information to the civil servants.

In a 12-point communique issued at the end of the congress, the journalists condemned the recent attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area of the state where many lives and property were lost and urged security agencies to step up their game by being proactive in responding to early warnings and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

The congress further called on the security agencies to be forthcoming with information to enable journalists report accurately and in time to better serve the society.

They also tasked the government to act fast to stem the tide of attacks on communities in the state.

On the rising wave of the kidnap of traditional rulers across the state, the congress observed that the situation was getting out of hand, which was sending a dangerous signal and urged that steps be taken to curb the menace in the state.

“Congress advocated that the law on land grabbing and kidnapping should be fully enforced to serve as deterrent to perpetrators of crime and criminality.

Congress also raised alarm on the increasing spade of domestic violence involving house helps and called on security agencies to prosecute those found wanting and cautioned parents against releasing their children to unknown people.

It also cautioned politicians to guard their utterances and act with decorum in their campaigns and called on stakeholders to ensure level playing ground for all political parties and play the game according to the rules as the nation move towards the 2023 general elections.

The NUJ tasked members on the need to double check their facts before publishing any story to guard against the spreading fake news, especially in the electioneering period.

Members also commended the Plateau State Government for renovating and remodeling the NUJ Press Centre which has given it a befitting look and appealed for the completion of the project to enable journalists use the edifice to enhance their work.
