Stakeholders Did Not Endorse Rebuilding Jos Main Market – PIDAN

By Ralph Madugu

Plateau Initiative for the Development and Advancement of the Natives, PIDAN has refuted claims that stakeholders in Plateau State have endorsed the rebuilding of the Jos Main Market.

PIDAN, while reacting to a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor captioned “Stakeholders Endorse Rebuilding of Jos Main Market” described the statement as “not just surprising, but embarrassing and ridiculing to the integrity of our highly respected eminent elder statesmen and groups who gave their counsels during the parley, because it did not reflect the position of taken at the meeting.”

The Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor of Plateau State, Dr. Makut Simon Macham, had in a statement issued on August 6, 2022, claimed that stakeholders endorsed the rebuilding of the Jos Main Market.

But in a press release issued in Jos and signed by PIDAN Secretary General, Comrade Nanle Gujor, PIDAN said: “We believe that the government would have put the perspective of the meeting in its true position of keeping it on hold, and awaits the outcome of the further consultations with the grass roots at the local government level, rather than the conclusive headlines.”

The organization reiterated its position that the project be kept on hold until all the grey issues raised at the meeting were properly scrutinized and solutions found.

“We encourage the leadership of the various Development Associations to mobilize their membership to attain and present their sincere positions at the various parleys.”

Recall that the Plateau State Government had indicated intention to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Jaiz Bank for rebuilding the burnt market but the decision of the government has been trailed by vehement opposition from sections of the state which necessitated the State Government embarking on wider consultation to secure the buy-in citizens.
