COCIN Elects New President, Adopts ‘Walking in Unity’ as 2022 Theme

The centenary General Church Council meeting of COCIN has ended in Jos with the election of Rev. Dr. Amos Musa Mohzo as the new President. Until his election, Rev. Dr. Mohzo was COCIN’s Vice President.

He is to succeed Rev. Prof. Dachollom Datiri whose tenure expires at the end of 2021. Dr. Mohzo polled 226 votes to defeat the current COCIN General Secretary, Rev. Associate Prof.  Benjamin Pokol, who polled 39 votes out of the 268 votes cast.                 

Similarly, COCIN has adopted ‘Walking in Unity’ taken from Philippians 2:3-4, as its 2022 theme as well as Prayer and Revival, Discipleship, Missions and Evangelism as goals for the coming year.

This was contained in a 15-point communique issued at the end of the GCC meeting.

While calling on members to be more vigilant and proactive regarding the security of their communities and the Church, COCIN encouraged them to remain steadfast in prayer towards the restoration of the KKU license and take-off of the university.

Commending President Muhammadu Buhari for granting audience to the COCIN leadership in 2018 during which discussions were held towards finding lasting solutions to the perennial killing of innocent citizens and the destruction of churches, homes and other properties, it called on the Federal Government to consider the recommendations made in the report submitted during the visit and implement same towards tackling current security challenges.

On corruption, COCIN maintained that it “detest the level of corruption that has eaten deep into the fabrics of the various sectors of the nation” and called on government at all levels to fight corruption without bias.

It also appeal to the government to address the “unprecedented inflations and economic hardship” affecting the daily lives of the citizenry.

Answering questions from newsmen shortly after his election, Rev. Dr. Amos Mohzo said, “The task ahead is big but it is not by my might. I don’t have any knowledge to carry the burden of the Church as a whole but we trust in God because it is His own work. Ours is to make ourselves available for Him to use us.”

In a message to COCIN members, the President-elect called on Christians to draw closer to God, stating that the days were evil, hence “we need to love our God and draw nearer to Him so that He will sustain us in the tough journey.”

On the issue of Karl Kumm University, the Rev. Dr. Mohzo said “Karl Kumm University is a project owned by the Church and when there are hitches in the going of the University, we come together to discuss about that.

“Our desire as COCIN family, is to have a University that we will use to the glory of God and people will benefit from it. So, collectively we are thinking of how to overcome the hitches.”
